IoTSyn is a physics-based generator of synthetic datasets for the Internet of Things. It was incubated at the Institute and has been active since 2025. Rather than producing data from opaque, black-box models, IoTSyn derives every dataset from documented mathematical equations, so the result is transparent and reproducible.

The generator covers six domains: smart-home sensors, network security, predictive maintenance, medical IoT, industrial IoT traffic, and connected vehicles. Its models draw on established science, including ordinary differential equations, Weibull distributions, and Markov chains, and each dataset ships with a validation file that records statistical tests and physical checks.

IoTSyn is the engine behind the synthetic collections of IoT Dataset. It is openly licensed (CC0) with a free tier, and is built so that the same inputs always produce the same data, which makes results easy to verify and to peer review. This commitment to a transparent, reproducible method reflects the Institute's values in research integrity and open science.
