The Canadian Institute for Middle East and Gulf Studies is an independent, not-for-profit research institute. Its researchers hold an academic standing that reflects their experience and their contribution, not a commercial position. Whatever their rank, every researcher joins one community devoted to the economic, social, cultural, technological, and environmental study of the Middle East, the Gulf, and North Africa, and to their heritage, arts, and education.
Ranks are awarded on scholarly merit. They open the same doors to every holder, and what changes with rank is the depth of the role and the responsibility it carries.
Leadership
Director of Research
Sets the Institute's research agenda, chairs the review of projects and research ethics, and mentors its researchers. Held by a scholar of standing who guides the direction of the Institute's work.
Core researchers
Senior Researcher
A recognized expert who leads projects, supervises colleagues, and represents the Institute in their field. Senior Researchers sit on its review and editorial panels.
Researcher
An established scholar who designs and carries out research, publishes its findings, and takes a full part in the life of the research community.
Fellows
Fellowships recognize scholars who work with the Institute while keeping their own academic home. They reflect the mode of affiliation rather than seniority.
Resident Research Fellow
Works from the Institute for the term of the fellowship, leads or joins its projects, and takes a sustained part in its research and its events.
Non-resident Research Fellow
Contributes from their own institution or country, carries the Institute's affiliation, publishes under it, and joins its convenings, without the need to be on site.
Associate Researcher
Collaborates on specific projects and contributes to the Institute's publications and dialogues, as a step into the wider research community.
Early career
Postdoctoral Researcher
An early-career scholar, recently awarded a doctorate, who pursues a research programme under the mentorship of a senior colleague.
Research Assistant
Supports projects with data, fieldwork, and analysis, and builds research skills through the Institute and its training academy.
Affiliated
Affiliated Researcher
A scholar or practitioner whose work aligns with the Institute and who is named as an affiliate, contributing on a flexible basis.

As a not-for-profit, the Institute is carried on without the purpose of gain. A rank is a mark of standing and contribution, and any support a researcher receives flows through a specific project or grant.
